When leaving a voice mail state your
name and phone number before going into the detail of your
message. If your message was a little lengthy it also helps to
reiterate your number before you hang up as well. It may seem
repetitive, but the person you are calling usually appreciates it.

Our
Launch in
Los Angeles County
By Pauline Parry

The evening was attended by 65 guests
who enjoyed delicious tray passed savory appetizers and petite parfaits
of desserts in the Wedgwood Room at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa
Monica. The room was dressed in the WIPA colors of pink,
chocolate and orange by Chameleon Chairs, Wildflower Linens and Shirvan
Florals. Fortune Entertainment entertained us with the sounds of
a flute and classical guitar as guests gathered to hear all about
WIPA. The evening was documented by Mikel Healey who
photographed the evening as it unfolded. The audience
were enthusiastic as well as delighted by all that they heard.

President's Message
Be in the Winners Circle by Breaking Tradition
A holiday wedding on a winter's eve...boughs of Christmas green, red
damask linens, a crackling fire... ball gowns, black ties, cha! cha!
cha! From an intimate at-home gathering to a magnificent mansion
gala, these weddings are alive with personality and soul... but, they
don't always have to follow TRADITION.
For years, we have been advising our brides and grooms to stay away
from the traditional wedding music. I'm sure you have seen the
movie "Four Weddings and a Funeral." Both of these
"life celebrations" often share something in common - the
music. Trust me, you will hear Ave Maria and Canon in D at both a
wedding and a funeral! It's time we separated the two and broke
tradition!! Instead of the standard wedding (or funeral) music at
the ceremony, we encourage our clients to pick something that's bold,
regal and reflective of their wedding design concept or personal
tastes. At an Italian theme wedding, the bride chose to walk down
the aisle to Verdi's Grand March from Aida. Another couple whose
wedding honored their Asian heritage chose music from the opera Madame
Butterfly. And at a gay couple's wedding, they selected Dancing
Queen by Abba.
How we pay for weddings today is also very non-traditional.
According to the "2006 American Wedding Study" by the Condé
Nast Bridal Media, the bride's parents fund the festivities only 30% of
the time. If a couple is older with established professional
careers, they themselves are paying. Sometimes we see gifts given
by both the groom's and bride's families, or couples setting up wedding
bank accounts to which both sides of the family can contribute.
So it's not just the bride's parents paying any more... so much for
tradition!
Is tradition about being superstitious? Like something bad will
happen to you if you break tradition? When it comes to the
decision of whether the bride and groom will see each other before the
ceremony, many good things can happen if they choose to forgo tradition.
The advantages of seeing each other beforehand are numerous - private
quiet moments together, to be alone and share that special moment just
between the bride and groom - without a hundred of their best friends
staring at them while the photographer snaps away. Is it more
important for guests seated in the back row to see the bride first, or
for the groom to spend some quiet time with her? Don't you think
guests would appreciate being with the bride and groom immediately
after the ceremony, rather than waiting until cocktail hour is almost
over before the couple arrives? And maybe the couple might want
to enjoy their cocktail reception too! We have never had a couple
regret seeing each other before the ceremony.
Some would never dream of deviating from tradition, while others pride
themselves on being trail blazers. WIPA represents a new era and
a new voice for wedding industry professionals, breaking from
tradition, encouraging our members to challenge conventional approaches
and consider fresh alternatives in the execution of weddings. We
are a nonprofit trade association run by our members - professionals
who understand what it takes to produce a wedding. WIPA's Board
of Directors and Committees are now working hard to channel their
nuptial know-how into creating top-notch opportunities for education,
mentoring, certification, networking and business support. During
the months of October and November, WIPA successfully launched four
networking events, reaching over 400 wedding industry professionals and
helping to build a stronger sense of community. As a result of
our membership's expertise, the bridal media has begun to take notice
of WIPA, and some of our Founding Sponsors and Members have offered
their expert advice in response to the media's inquiries.
Despite all of my talk about breaking from tradition, I'm certainly not
suggesting that we should say "Bah Humbug" to the upcoming
holidays. Giving gifts to loved ones will never go out of style,
and everyone in our industry loves a festive celebration. But
maybe instead of decking the halls in traditional hues of red and
green, you might want to try a palette of glossy white, metallic gray,
bold magenta and sleek black... very Chanel... just to be
different. In any event, no matter how you choose to celebrate
this holiday season, I wish you all the best of health and happiness.
