RETREAT TO RECHARGE

There is a saying – he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. Retreating has gotten something of a bad rap in our Type A world but there is no lost honor in retreating, especially when it means we will come back from it stronger.

For those of you who know me, you know I am more the type to retreat and recharge with a matinee with my daughter or a manicure-pedicure on Sunday afternoon than I am by meditating. However, I’m not above being moved by a Zen like this quote a friend sent me:

“Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand – relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.” Osho

I urge you, even in your busy wedding season, to take a moment to relax so you can begin vibrating with positive energy; to replenish your creativity so you have something to give back to your family, friends, clients and team.

We are all in the business of being creative and creativity evaporates under stress. In order to give back, we need to have something to give. The way to do that is to replenish your inner spirit and refresh the mind.

You can do this on your own in whatever way suits you, or you can do it with members of WIPA on July 7 for what I’m calling a mini WIPA Retreat!

On that day, we are doing a program on how to get your work published. Four editors – from established to renegade – will talk about how to think like an editor in order to get press. But in order to get published in the first place, you need to produce fabulous, inspired work. And you can’t do that when you are frazzled and tired.

So I hope you join us on July 7 in Malibu. We will be at the Church Estates Winery, a beautiful estate with a French chateau, rolling vineyards and gardens inspired by Monet. After our educational session, we’ll enjoy each other’s company and a relaxing gourmet lunch by the lake.

Here’s to a one-day retreat to refresh and revive in order to come back strong and creative!

PROGRAM:
You know it isn't easy to accomplish, but having your work published is the ultimate form of professional recognition in the industry.  In this program, you will find out where to get and how to use the keys that will help open the editorial lock.

Take part in this conversation as four amazing pros from different spectrums of the wedding media discuss how to approach the media for best results.  Get tips on what you can do to get and keep their attention.  Find out what they are looking for from you and how to deliver it.  And of course, learn what not to do in the process.

Rebecca Crumley, Real Weddings photo editor of The Knot, will discuss strategy behind editorial content and how to tap into what works for her content-wise.

Allison Kornberg-Walch's Plan My Wedding Los Angeles Blog that documented her totally crowd-sourced wedding is one of the LA Times' most followed blogs.  In the process of its creation and growth, she discovered a lot about how vendors approach not only bloggers but brides.  She'll share with you what works and what doesn't.

With years of experience online, not just in weddings, Katrina Razavi, founder of Marriage.com, will reveal her best tips and tricks that enable you to stand out as a vendor in online space, as well as on your own website and blog.

Finally, as a bridal blogger who has bridged the gap between mainstream and offbeat wedding media, Dana LaRue, founder of The Broke-Ass Bride will share insight into the etiquette of pitching, pitfalls to avoid, and knowing your audience.

In this session you will learn:

How to think like an editor.  Knowing what makes the cut and what doesn't will help you shape and present content and photos

•••

The importance of learning about and understanding an editor's needs when pitching a product, idea or wedding profile

•••

Why your own blog and website matter and how to differentiate them

•••

How, as a vendor, you can stand out in a crowded market

MEMORABLE MOMENTS FROM OUR JUNE MEETING

Destination Weddings that WOW

Indulge me for a minute. I want to get personal. I have only been on the board of WIPA for a few months but I’m impressed. We come together all in one room only rarely. Of course we talk on the phone monthly and volley e-mails back and forth so much you’d think we were Gabrielle Reece (we’d like to think so too)! But for the most part, we each take on our roles, working with our committees seriously, professionally, and separately. Sometimes we know the extent of each other’s work only when we arrive at the program.

This past program in San Diego was the perfect example. While most seem to come together easily, this one was a difficult birth. It wasn’t finalized until about three weeks before the date. And in those three weeks we asked the program chairs to move the location and to ask their sponsors if they wouldn’t mind making a few teeny tiny changes too -- like altering the location, date and time.

Credit for this event, coming together as it did, goes to co-chairs Nahid Farhoud of Wedding Elegance by Nahid in San Diego, and Lindsey Longacre from LVL Weddings & Events in Fountain Valley, led by Programs Director Anseth Richards from Bridal Bar San Diego.

They immediately picked up on the title and spirit of the session -- A Sense of Place: Creating Destination Weddings that Wow. So while the speakers, Ali Phillips from Engaging Events in Chicago, and Dina Douglass from Andrena Photography, imparted valuable lessons learned from the myriad destination weddings they have produced and photographed all over the world, the décor, entertainment and food shared the bill equally.

The Park Hyatt Aviara was the perfect venue for a theme that transported guests to a 1920’s cruise with ports of call in exotic India, Morocco and Turkey. Eighteen sponsors in all were showcased. Nahid and Lindsey took on the challenge of being cruise director to an audience of their peers creating a full itinerary that included vintage décor, five entertainment segments including belly dancers and henna artists, a hookah bar, a nitrous ice cream bar and a turkish coffee barista.

I don’t mean to call out these activities over any other but I do want to point out that it takes a village to produce an event and it takes an association like WIPA to raise the bar on what a meeting is. Sandee of Candee by Sandee summed it up with a post on WIPA’s Facebook page, “I can hardly call that a “meeting!” Thanks Sandee. We hope to create more non-meetings like this in the near future!

Thank you to all our sponsors of the June 2 meeting: Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club and Spa, La Tavola Linen, Shawna Yamamoto Event Design, Ambiance Designs by Shawn Adams, Denny White Music, Sohaila’s Academy of Artistic Dance/Sohaila International Promotions, Mobile Music Plus, Henna San Diego, Fumari, Luminaire Images, A Vibrant Wedding Invitations & Stationery, Classic Film Works, Pow Wow, Artistica Event Design, Eurobar Coffee & Beverage Events, and Sensational Treats.
