A Bold Proposal for 2011
I have a bold proposal to make as we go into 2011. I propose that that we get down to not just talking about, but actually doing serious business.
For the past two years myself and my team at Good Gracious! Events have been working all the angles of marketing with social networking, being out there and extending our selves and our time to be as noticeable as possible. I know we have not been the only ones working hard like this. I see all of my colleagues and WIPA friends doing the same. And still, I think we’d all agree, the results aren’t anything like what they would have been had we been working this hard and this smart in any other economy.
So, let’s plan our action. How can we – the wedding industry – be even more proactive in 2011? We know that our clients are savvy. They are on the internet, they are reading blogs and magazines, they are even bloggers themselves and as such influence leaders. They know a lot, but there is a difference between reading about being in battle and actually spending time in the trenches. There is just no substitute for experience. Our job is to convey this message and get not just in sync with our clients but perhaps a little ahead of them.
My first thought is to approach a bride not as “a” planner or “a” caterer, but to bring a team to the table. Think about it. A Colin Cowie wedding is just that because he is the star; the front man for a fantastic team. And the client comes to him for that RIGHT team together.
My bold proposal is that we all start thinking like stars!
We bring a lot to the table in terms of know-how, and the client needs us to bring it with confidence and excitement. After all, her wedding is not just about how low the price is, but about how amazing, memorable and reflective of her style as possible.
I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I do believe this is the beginning of a long, juicy conversation that will continue when WIPA’s next speaker, Andy Ebon, consultant and owner/operator of The Wedding Market Network, takes the stage at Napa’s Meadowood Resort on February 8. His topic? Getting Down to Business. Let’s talk about it. Then let’s do it!
Here’s to a successful 2011!

Rebecca will share her unique perspective as a strategic wedding industry consultant including the latest statistics, insights and compelling opportunities specifically related to the business of weddings. Selling To The Modern Bride, Her Groom, Her Mother, Her Father, Her Bridesmaids and The Kitchen Sink….
Ali Phillips, Founder
Engaging Events by Ali, Inc., Chicago, IL
Over the years, wedding planners have had to adapt to selling to many different people including the mother of the bride, father of the groom, bridesmaids, and everyone else but the kitchen sink. This will be a fun and informative class on how wedding consultants can best adapt to this new sales cycle and sell their services and benefits to everyone in ONE meeting.
DELIVERABLES:
- Learn how to pre-qualify your potential clients and determine if the client is “your client”. Are they right for you? Are you right for them? Are they going to end up firing you? Or will you fire THEM?
- How to take the wheel and chauffeur your extended bridal family meeting so you get the positive results and also satisfy the opinions of the “peanut gallery” (e.g.: the moms, sisters and step-moms).
- How to seal the deal with the bridal entourage, send them all down the aisle and how to secure future business.
- Learn or affirm the advantages of making sure each “prospect” in the meeting feels their needs and concerns are being addressed while still allowing the bride and groom to feel their needs are your primary concern.

Join WIPA on February, 27-March 3, 2011 in Las Vegas for CATERSOURCE/EVENT SOLUTIONS. Not to be missed are the ideas, education and inspiration provided in both the educational and networking opportunities of these “sister” events. Taking place at Las Vegas’ just-opened Cosmopolitan Hotel, which was designed by acclaimed architects and designers Friedmutter Group and Arquitectonica, energy for these two events will be off the charts.
March 8, 2011 in Los Angeles, Richard Aaron of BizBash joins WIPA at Vibiana in Los Angeles. Currently the president of BizBash, Richard, whose nickname is THE King of Edutainment, was recently named MPI’s International Planner of the Year and Event Solution’s Visionary. Richard, whose accolades number too many to list, will speak and entertain questions for WIPA attendees at Vibiana, an enchanting recently-renovated Los Angeles venue known not only for its intimate spaces, but also for its knowledge in and incorporation of sustainable event strategies and healthy, hearty organic menus.
Richard will deliver keen insights into the latest forces in cultural engagement that will be shaping creative strategies for meetings and events in 2010. Richard will also spice up this session with the latest BiZBash discoveries in design, lighting, and themes to help you create the most memorable catered event experiences direct from the pages of BizBash. Creative partners in the wedding industry will love the way Richard brings to life large-scale event elements in ways that are easily incorporated in more intimate events. Join WIPA and discover the top-thought leadership concepts in this session that separates the fads and trends for planners.
Katy Carrier, founder of Carrier and Associates, a law firm for the creative business, speaks about and answers attendees questions on a wide range of legal issues surrounding business owners and social media ethics and weddings. This April 5th meeting takes place in San Diego at Maderas Golf Club.
Recently, Katy’s work, Avoiding Defamation, Slander and Libel, was shared by hundreds of event professionals through her blog and twitter. The topic both struck a chord with event professionals and provided insight that had to date not yet been provided in a public forum. Prepare for this session by bringing your toughest legal questions relating to drafting client contracts, blogging compliance, and intellectual property ownership/disputes. Katy will guide our discussion of these topics and others that pertain to event industry professionals.

On May 3, 2011, David Hauser of Grasshopper.com, will present “Entrepreneurship: Identifying a Need in your market; having the guts to fulfill and having the guts to be different.” David is one of the youngest people ever to be named to Inc’s List of 500 Fastest-Growing Private companies in America. He has been featured on CNN and in publications including the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Entrepreneur and others.
Having launched more than five successful start-ups by the age of 27, David’s passion lies in empowering entrepreneurs to succeed. If you’ve identified a need in your market and you know you can fulfill it, David will empower you to do so. If you’re not an entrepreneur, because you’re scared to make the leap, David will address your fears. If you’re an entrepreneur and you are struggling to stand out in the crowd, David will show you how. If you’re thinking about re-branding, David's insights will save you time, money and frustration. If you’re an entrepreneur and you think you know what your core values are, David will challenge you to think again. If you’re small and your budget is small, David will demonstrate how bigger budget doesn’t translate to greater awareness. You’ll walk away from David with concrete ideas of how to get people talking about what it is YOU do.
