So many of the phrases we use every day have to do with entertainment, specifically with music. We want to work in concert with one another, to get in sync and march to the same beat. And of course, we are always entertaining one thought or another!
Why is music such a large part of our speech? Perhaps because it goes right to the inescapable rhythms by which we live, literally. It’s the beat of our hearts and the rise and fall of our breath. But of course there are the louder drums to which we dance – the pull of the moon and the earth’s orbit. It’s all about seasons, isn’t it? And it’s all natural. We don’t have to do a thing. It just happens!
Weddings, however, are another story as we well know. And while they certainly have a rhythm of their own, it’s something as professionals we make happen. I remember my sister once attending her first event in America. She was intrigued by how we were able to change the mood of a party, or signal an action (such as being seated for dinner) with music. In a way you could say that the wedding planner is a conductor; the team – including the DJ and entertainers -- the orchestra.
But even though we might be playing a well-known song, each wedding is always a little different because, unlike an orchestra, an event team is made up of different players almost every time. And depending on who those people are, we ourselves are different. Not better. Not worse. Just different. I love that when I go into a meeting with new creative partners we are all listening carefully to one another (whether we know it or not!) to catch one another’s beat and start to harmonize.
These are the thoughts I entertain as the WIPA team plan the November meeting. Our speaker talks about, you guessed it …The Art of Entertainment. Andy Kushner, president of Andy Kushner Entertainment. We could learn from no better. Andy was named Modern Bride’s Top 25 Trendsetters and online as one of Colin Cowie’s “Fabulous Friends.” He’s won multiple awards and has launched many entertainment concepts for weddings and events.

Andrew has designed events and prepared menus and events honoring dignitaries and glitterati for over the last three decades. He has cooked for three US presidents, Martha Stewart and at the renowned James Beard House in New York City.
He grew up in London, working in his relative's restaurant and butcher shop. His aunts introduced him early to the bounty of local purveyors at London's historic Borough Market where he also “worked” at a young age. His family moved to San Diego in 1974.
He was chef and baker of one of California's first handcrafted on-premise bakery/restaurants. He was director of catering at Southern California's celebrated Piret's, and at several other respected catering firms. Andrew has consulted and cooked with London's Mustard Catering Ltd. and has been tutored by the cheesemongers at Neal's Yard Dairy also in London.
Andrew is a co-founder of Passionfish and Cooks Confab. He also sits on the Advisory Board of Catering Magazine and Event Solutions Magazine. He is an Associate Board Member of the Slow Food Convivium San Diego. He is a past member of the Director's Cabinet for Scripps Institution of Oceanography and E.W. Scripps Associate. He helped develop Blue Ocean Institute’s “Green Chefs Blue Ocean" program, a national curriculum for culinary students and continuing education for chefs.
Andrew regularly lectures to the industry and public (yep, kids too) on sustainability, cooking, event design, culinary responsibility and entertaining. His events, interviews and photos have been featured in numerous local and national magazines, radio and TV.
He has received the coveted ACE Award as Best Caterer in the West, Spotlight Award as National Caterer of the Year, and Waters Fine Catering has consistently won accolades from a host of local magazines as Best Caterer in San Diego.

More WIPA Member News…
For Pat Gibbons, Owner of Pat Gibbons Floral Designs, it all started 3 years ago when some honeybees took over a plaster of paris planter and made a small hive inside. While she could occasionally get a taste of their honey, there wasn’t much Pat could do without disturbing the bees. Now, after much reading and taking some beekeeping classes, she has 3 hives which are all doing well. Pat remarks, “It’s been an amazing process to learn about the lives of bees and have them part of the garden and my life. There’s nothing like sitting in the garden and having a cup of tea and watching the bees.” Pat’s story will be included in a book on local beekeepers, which will soon be published.
On Sunday August 29th, Ruby Frandsen with BBJ Linen participated in a wedding fair with a special kind of twist – the first “Green Wedding Fair” in the San Francisco Bay Area. Palo Alto, being a green city, and Crowne Cabana Hotel hosted this environmentally conscious event.

Dear WIPA Members,
One of my favorite parts of the wedding planning experience with my clients is the entertainment. As a matter of fact, I would say it’s my greatest passion.
So I am so delighted and excited for our fabulous November event at the elegant Claremont Hotel Club and Spa in Northern California. It will not only be a very special evening to celebrate and honor a great year for WIPA as our last event of 2010, but we will be welcoming Modern Bride 2009 Trendsetter and award winning Entertainment Producer Andy Kushner who will engage and educate us about “The Art of Entertainment : Exceeding Client Expectations with Captivating Wedding Entertainment”.
Andy and his company Andy Kushner Entertainment have been part of some of the most incredible and memorable wedding entertainment experiences across the country. No wonder celebrity wedding planner Colin Cowie counts him as one of his “Fabulous Friends” who takes HIS weddings to the top!
From sharing the newest and most interesting upcoming trends in music and wedding entertainment, to insight on how to use entertainment to bring other wedding creative partners into the experience and shine; this is sure to be one meeting and special evening of entertaining surprises all night long you will not want to miss!!
