ALL THINGS WEDDINGS

REFLECTIONS:
Everything Old is New Again

There I was doing a tasting at the offices of one of my chic fashion clients expecting to see the latest in clothing trends. I waited. And waited. It was then that it struck me – everyone WAS dressed in the latest looks, but it was as if no time had passed between now and the thirties. And true to their hip-again vintage attire, they wanted the service at their event to be traditional and the food to be classic with a modern presentation.

As I drove back to the office, I couldn’t help but reflect on the irony -- even with all the advances in technology, all the choices now available to us in terms of lifestyle, travel, entertaining and wedding style, that there is a balance that comes together with old and new. In fact, the style known as “vintage” is defined as a mixture of pieces from past eras as defined best by the Anthropologie brand.

But by this definition one could say that our business philosophies today are somewhat vintage -- a mixture of comforting and time-worn (and time-tested) elements from various eras. Just as white shoes on men are coming back in vogue, solid principles of business are making a welcome return.

These past few years have led us to rediscover old ways of doing things as we guide our companies through difficult waters. While there are always a few exceptions, I believe that for the most part we all have returned to doing business in a more personal manner, reaching out and connecting with one another face-to-face through meetings offered by organizations such as WIPA, learning and relearning how to be successful, setting standards, raising the bar, and putting changes into place that will make our entire industry stronger.

In the end, business is never about an individual. After all, there are always at least two people involved! And as new people enter the wedding and events industries, business becomes more and more inclusive. New professionals revisit old lessons while experienced pros brush up on the basics. We all can use the same information.

And while there might not be much reason for white shoes on men, there is always a need to refresh ourselves on business niceties – thank you notes, reciprocity, codes of ethics and the simple joy of a job well done. Together they form a new style of working that isn’t “vintage,” it isn’t “retro,” and it isn’t “neo.” It’s just plain good business and thankfully that never goes out of style!

The Readers Forum  asked the question “What's Your Dream Technology?” to which Carol replied, “a room scanner that would tell me if all the tables, bars, buffets etc. are in the right place and if each one has the correct number of chairs and place settings.”  Wouldn't that just be the best thing ever?!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS AT OUR JULY MEETING

Written by: Tracey Kumer-Moore, JWIC
Your Las Vegas Wedding Concierge

Tracey Kumer-Moore, JWIC
Your Las Vegas Wedding Concierge
WIPA Education Director

The lovely Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, was the setting for WIPA’s July networking meeting was “Fit for a King”, King Dahl, Executive Director of Event Design of MGM Resorts Events in Las Vegas, that is!!

The meeting kicked off with a lively networking and registration as members brushed away the unusual July drizzle with great conversation, a kick of energy provided by the delicious gourmet coffee bar brimming with delicious toppings and a then a trip into the ePod Talking Photo Booth!

Cocktail tables dressed in crisp, modern chocolate brown and white linens provided by BBJ Linens were accented by the lovely and nature inspired mix of flora and plant arrangements created by Peony Floral, based in San Diego.

WIPA President Pauline Parry kicked off the program in welcoming everyone to Carlsbad and thanking our generous host, Sarah Sargent, Catering Sales Manager at the Sheraton Carlsbad as well as the WIPA members, attending Board of Directors and Guests. Program Chairs Nahid Farhoud and Jessica Gillon thanked our wonderful sponsors and then I had the distinct pleasure to introduce our guest speaker, King Dahl, a fellow Las Vegan.

Never to let an opportunity for a toast or a tribute with bubbly go by, our Pauline Parry presented King with his very own “Sparkling King” couture custom cocktail created exclusively for this occasion by Las Vegas based, “Dress the Drink” & Dress the Event:: The Ultimate Drink Dessert and Event Garnishing Company”. A fabulous concoction created with Martini & Rossi Sparkling Rose Wine, accented with a “DTD” Signature Edible Diamond and “Wild Blueberry” Gourmet Sugar Rim, everyone in attendance got to enjoy this delectable libation and toast our speaker.

King’s presentation, “Designs that Inspire” was truly inspiring on two levels.

  1. Describing the creative process & showcasing truly spectacular events at the leading edge of event design trends his company MGM Resorts Events creates for weddings and other events at their 11 Las Vegas properties and

  2. How to “Inspire” your business to your own creative vision, mission and core values of success!

INSPIRATION: “To Provoke or Arouse a particular feeling in someone.”

The Creative Process is incredibly important and King’s insistence that working together with “Creative Partners” (notice he did not say “vendors”) was so important to hear for all of us. He really drove home the essence of just how much impact involving every partner, from planner and caterer and venue to the photographer, designer and so-on has and can influence a successful wedding from the beginning of the planning process to the final production.

Some of the components that make up a well designed event are Entry Treatments that make an impactful first and lasting impression; Signature Focal Points that are the “star of the show” such as a unique buffet, Cake Table, a Mandap for an Indian Wedding set above a swimming pool or an elephant for an Indian groom’s parade!

INSPIRATION: “To exert a beneficial effect upon a person or business.”

King started this off with a great quote about leadership-“An effective leader is someone who does the right things and avoids doing the wrong things”. It sounds so easy doesn’t it? But, being a leader requires implementing a vision statement (what is yours), a mission statement (what is yours) and a set of CORE values that will take everyone in your company down the road of success. Great Leaders….

  • Communicate Clear Concise Expectations and “Keep it Simple”

  • Attribute Success to others and take the responsibility for the failures

  • They accept accountability and takes steps to be prepared for crisis.

  • They AVOID “OPUD”; an acronym for Over Promising and Under Delivering.

  • Can get dedication, focus, patience and “buy-in” of the project or the business itself from those they work with and those they employ.

  • And they have a strategic 5 step plan: VISION, VALUES, MISSION, GOALS, STRATEGY and TACTICS that they are continually reviewing and improving on.

  • Can take a good project or event or business and they make it better for themselves and for all those who they lead.

The luncheon décor was a delightful mix of traditional and modern with a China-Blue Damask patterned linen and napkins from BBJ linens and traditional floral arrangements in sterling silver vases. Square tables and the sleek, white leather and chrome chairs from KOOL Party Rentals provided that perfect modern accent.
The cloudy weather outside was no match again for the delicious, summery Tapas inspired luncheon menu that the Sheraton prepared that included Chinese Box Shrimp and Udon Salad, Tandoori Shrimp and Dragon Dressing, mouthwatering Korean Beef and Minted Watermelon Salad and Sweet Corn Ravioli Olivetti and Chive Crème Fraiche. And, to top it all off, a delightful dessert table of little la Opera Petite Sweets with Local Carlsbad Strawberries and Artisan Cream Puffs were enjoyed as attendees broke into SIG (Special Interest Groups).

Thank you to our July Programs Chairs Nahid Farhoud and Jessica Gillon for putting together an outstanding meeting and…

SEND US YOUR HOT TOPIC

If you have an idea or story to share, tell us about it!

WIPA, we need your input to tell us what you and your colleagues are discussing so we can bring it to the forefront at WIPA meetings and address it together as WIPA professionals. You matter, your feedback matters so we can educate our wedding industry, other event professionals, and most   importantly, educate brides and the media as to what we have to say in accordance with our vision and mission and core values!  We can't wait to hear from you! Please email your "Hot Topic Ideas" to your Education Director, Tracey Kumer Moore at Tracey@LVWeddingConcierge.com.
